BCCI gets Dhoni, Kapil on common ground
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) made their annual awards extra special on Saturday by getting India's two World Cup-winning captains Kapil Dev and Mahendra Singh Dhoni to pose together with the 1983 and 2011 trophies.
Quite expectedly, it received a wholesome applause from the select audience at a five-star hotel in Bandra on Saturday. “This is a marvelous plan by the BCCI (to pose with the World Cup trophies),” said Kapil, who was honoured with the C K Nayudu Lifetime Achievement award.
Kapil appeared emotional after viewing some old footage during the audio-video presentation. He said: “It is only now, when you look at these visuals that you think about them (the awards). It is a great pleasure to come here and receive this award.
I would like to thank all my captains and my family for this.” Kapil had a word of advice for all the award winners: “I hope the youngsters would keep the spirit of the game intact and take care of the game.”
Former stalwarts Bapu Nadkarni, Farokh Engineer and late Eknath Solkar were also felicitated by the BCCI for their contribution to Indian cricket. Nadkarni and UK-based Engineer were indisposed while Solkar’s wife Shital received the award on behalf of her late husband.
Current Indian team’s stars Rohit Sharma and R Ashwin received the Polly Umrigar Award and the Dilip Sardesai Award respectively while Abhishek Nayar received the Lala Amarnath Trophy as the best all-rounder in the last Ranji Trophy season.
