Brave cops arrest duo despite being attacked with sharp weapons
Two police officials from the Hadapsar police station were assaulted by two chain-snatchers yesterday while they were chasing them from Bhosale Garden to Sadhana Vidyalaya in Hadapsar
The chase which lasted for 15 minutes, ended after the duo was arrested by officials with the help of locals who were on their morning walk.
The duo was identified as Omkar Shiva Rathod (20) and his brother Ishwar (18), both residents of Rajewadi in Choufula, Saswad. Both are history-sheeters. Even their father has several cases of robbery against him, the police said.
The injured police officers include sub-inspectors Prasad Lonare and Bhushan Pawar. While Pawar sustained serious injuries to his leg and is undergoing treatment at Noble hospital, Lonare received minor injuries to his hand, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone IV) Manoj Patil said.
“We had laid a trap near Bhosale Garden, as more than four chain-snatching incidents were reported from the same spot this year. Wearing fake jewellery, constable Sujata Kunjir was walking down the road near the spot when the two offenders approached her on a bike. They tried to snatch her ornaments, but she retaliated and raised an alarm. On hearing her cries, constable Sameer Shaikh alerted PSIs Lonare and Pawar, who were stationed at a distance. The two officers started chasing the miscreants who fled,” Patil said.
He added that the duo took off in the direction of Sadhana Vidyalaya Road where they were intercepted by other officers, but all four of them fell off their bikes.
“PSI Pawar tried to catch one of the offenders, but was attacked with a sharp weapon on his leg. Meanwhile, inspector Raghunath Jadhav and his men, including constable Satish Raikar from Hadapsar police station, reached the spot and alerted local residents who were on their morning walk. PSI Pawar, despite being injured, went ahead and nabbed one of the accused. Finally, residents and the police managed to nab both the miscreants,” Patil said.
He added, “The accused, Omkar and Ishwar Rathod, had stolen a bike from the jurisdiction of Lonikand police station. They used the bike to commit chain snatchings. We are verifying their record, as well as their father’s. Primary investigation has revealed that the culprits have committed similar offences in the past.”
