Sanjay Dutt out on parole, second time in three months

Convicted Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt was released on a month’s parole from the Yerawada Central Prison on Saturday morning almost two weeks later after Divisional Commissioner Prabhakar Deshmukh granted him parole to spend time with his ailing wife Maanyata
Jail Superintendent Yogesh Desai confirmed that Dutt was released from the jail on Saturday morning at around 10.15am. After coming out of jail, Dutt accompanied by his relative Kumar Gaurav, left for Mumbai.
Dutt is serving his 42-month term out of the five years sentence after he was convicted on charges of possessing illegal firearms which were a part of the weapons cache supposed to have been used during the 1993 bombings in Mumbai.
Dutt was released on furlough for 14 days on October 1 after it was reported that he had to undergo treatment of blood clots formed in his legs. After this furlough was about to end, Dutt had applied for an extension of another 14 days. The Yerawada jail authorities had granted extension of furlough for Dutt. He had just returned to jail on October 30 to the jail after utilizing his 28-days of furlough.
The police, jail and district administration came under heavy criticism since Dutt was granted parole immediately after he had returned to jail. The officials however denied that any kind of “celebrity treatment” was being given to Dutt and claimed that all procedures were followed while granting parole to Dutt.
According to reports, Kumar Gaurav, who has remained guarantor for Dutt, was out of country. As per jail rules, the guarantor is required in person to complete the documentation before any prisoner is released on parole. After Gaurav arrived, the required documentation was completed and Dutt was released on Saturday morning.
