12 lab technicians sexually harassed by male colleague at KEM Hospital
The women have complained to the hospital's dean and their departmental head that the man would pass lewd comments and take photographs of them without their permission
Twelve lab technicians working at the civic-run KEM Hospital have lodged a complaint with the hospital authorities, saying that a male colleague sexually harassed them over several weeks. While a complaint was recently registered with the sexual harassment cell of the hospital, the issue first came to light three weeks ago, after the lab technicians approached Dr Sucheta Dandekar, head of the Biochemistry department.
A member of the committee said, on condition of anonymity: “The female lab technicians complained that another technician, Bhokare, used to pass lewd comments at them while working and would also take pictures of them without their permission. When the harassment continued for a while, they complained to the head of their department and the dean.”
Following this, the Biochemistry department’s head tried to transfer Bhokare to the Pathology department, but he refused. In a letter to the dean of the hospital (copy with MiD DAY), Dr Dandekar wrote that though the transfer was ordered as per guidelines from the sexual harassment committee, he refused to accept it.
“In the past, the hospital’s sexual harassment committee has reviewed many complaints from the staff and in several cases, action has been taken against the accused after further inquiries are conducted, which is a long process as it involves interviewing many people involved with the complainants,” added the doctor from the committee. Dr AK Gvalani, acting dean of the hospital, said, “A complaint has been registered with the sexual harassment committee and an inquiry is being conducted regarding this issue, after which action will be taken.”
