BMC promises action on 'terrace' slum
Chief engineer of SWM department will visit the colony and decide what action to take
On the day MiD DAY exposed illegally constructed terrace slums in a colony occupied by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) staffers, the chief engineer of the solid waste management (SWM) department said he would visit the colony and take action.
The Hasanabad Municipal colony in Khar belongs of the SWM department of the BMC.
MiD DAY had reported on the slums in its cover story yesterday, highlighting that the BMC, which is the body officially in charge of demolishing illegal structures, had turned a blind eye to these slums that had cropped on its very own property (Now, say hello to terrace slums, Oct 12).
S G Chitale, chief engineer of the SWM department, said, “I will personally visit the colony and study the problem and will decide accordingly what action should take.
Dilip Lande, MNS leader, said, “Though it is wrong to construct slums on terraces, the living conditions forced them to do so. The BMC, however, should provide them with proper houses. I will raise the issue in the upcoming Standing Committee meeting.”
