I'm changing tracks, sis! Shruti
In the midst of choreographing Aditya Chopra's Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, Vaibhavi says, "Shruti is a decade younger to me. She often accompanies me on the sets and even assists me. So for her, the question was: choreography or acting?"
She's serious now
The badi didi says that several producers have often asked Vaibhavi whether Shruti is interested in acting, "But she never put a serious thought to it. A while back, while on a trip to Naples, Wes Anderson (Darjeeling Limited, The Life Acquatic, The Royal Tenenbaums) saw her pictures and showed an interest. But she just let go. Now, however, she is keen to pursue acting and has also undergone an acting course."
Shruti is also a choreographer in her own right, "The climax steps of the track Koi Pathar Se Na Mare in Aaja Nach Le were hers!" informs Vaibhavi who has also made the stars groove in Tarun Manuskhani's Dostana and Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's Dilli 6.
Presently Shruti is in Gold Coast, Australia, with Vaibhavi's musical as the assistant choreographer of the show.
Vaibhavi's semi-autobiographical musical narrates the story of a girl who rebels against her classical dancer grandfather who wants her to continue the family tradition, but she chooses Bollywood. It is produced by veteran Australian stage producer Mark Brady and directed by British writer-director Toby Gough. The music is by the Salim-Sulaiman duo."The Merchants of Bollywood has been on tour of the Gold Coast since June. I was there for two weeks recently," says Vaibhavi. "After its opening in Australia over two years ago, we have had shows in Europe, UK and South Africa. In April 2009, we have lined up Milan with US and Canada later." The Merchants of Bollywood is on a tour till October.
The choreographer adds that the audience consists not only of the NRIs but a lot of the goras, too, who turn up in saris and bindis to enjoy the song and dance of Bollywood. "The scale of the musical is so huge that staging it in India would be difficult," adds Vabhavi who has also choreographed a track in Zoya Akhtar's Luck By Chance.
